Abused OFW from Kuwait Who Could Barely Speak in Flight Back Home, Brought to Mental Hospital

Shaking in fear, wringing her hands, furtively looking around as if someone was out to get her, eyes wide with fear, and barely making audible sentences, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who worked in Kuwait as domestic helper was seen showing signs of abuse in her flight back home to the Philippines.

Seeing the distressed woman whom news sites dubbed as “Jenny”, other Filipinas on the same flight tried to console her but this didn’t seem to help her at all because she seemed to withdraw to herself each time someone touches her hands and arms.

At one point she mumbled that her employer had been hitting her but according to Estella A. Vigilla who posted the video as well as other Filipinas on the same flight, Jenny spent most of the flight in fear and barely talked at all.

Despite being thousands of miles away from her abusive employers, she continued to show signs of the abuse she received in their hands.

Although she was from General Santos City, southern Philippines, she was not immediately permitted to go home but was brought to the National Mental Hospital for assessment and diagnosis.

Jenny was visited by Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac who said that they will coordinate with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the possibility of filing a case against her employer.

The distressed OFW’s recruitment agency might also face charges for neglect.

As of press time, Jenny has been cleared to go home and will be provided with medical and financial assistance. Her family will also receive livelihood assistance from the government.

What’s sad is that Jenny might never fully recover from the trauma she experienced – and she’s not alone! There have been over 400 cases of abuse in Kuwait alone – and that’s not counting those who did not report the incidents of abuse and chose to remain silent about what they had experienced in the hands of their cruel employers…
