An open letter asking a favor from President-elect Duterte to stop his verbal attacks towards the Catholic church has been making the rounds online.
In a Facebook post published recently, Fr. Jun Mercado wrote a conciliatory letter to the President-elect, perhaps hoping to arrest the widening divide between the incoming administration and the influential Catholic Church.
Fr. Jun Mercado made the appeal more personal by leveraging the deep respect of the President-elect to Nanay Soling, the deceased mother of President-elect Duterte to get a positive response.
Meanwhile, Fr. Jun Mercado wants to see the President-elect to live up to his promise as the catalyst for change because that is why the Catholic faithful, especially the poor who catapulted him to power.
Please read the full text of his open letter below:
I still keep my promise of allowing President Digong shape his government with no criticism…
I simply point out that the Catholic Church is NOT that as he describes with so much anger and bitterness …
Yes, we are both sinners and saints… but no one who really knows the church and loves her like her holy mother would agree with his diatribe against the Catholic Church…
He is NOT the Digong that I know…! At the least the sound of it …!
The 2016 Election was NOT a referendum between you and the Catholic Church! The Catholic faithful, especially the poor voted you to office, because of the hope for real CHANGE for the good! Please be that change…!
I am a Catholic and a priest and I will always stand for the Church – Saint and Sinner!
In this regard, I personally appeal to President Digong and in memory of his holy mother, Nanay Soling, stop and desist your diatribe against the Church.
