Dad Takes His Two Sons on Epic 4,000-Kilometer Motorcycle Journey from Mindanao to Luzon

The Philippines is a beautiful archipelago made up of over 7,100 islands grouped into three major divisions: Luzon in the north, Visayas in the middle, and Mindanao in the south. Most of those who travel in the country take boats or airplanes to and from major points, then go on bus rides or drive their own cars.

But a group of motorcycle riders from Mindanao planned something great: traveling from their hometown in Surigao (in Mindanao) to Appari (in northern Luzon) – and one dad brought along his two sons on that epic 4,000-kilometer motorcycle journey!

Resty Sambilad had already gone on the same route with four other bikers last September 19 to October 2. His children, 7-year-old Troy and 10-year-old Totti, had begged to join him but because he was still recovering from a hand injury that time, he didn’t want to risk further injury and a possible accident; thus, with a heavy heart he left the kids at home.

When a bigger group of riders went on the 2016 Mindanao Freedom Ride (MFR) Philippine loop on a 13-day journey from November 4 to 17, the kids once again begged to come and Resty didn’t have the heart to say “no” to his children again.

He customized his motorcycle so the kids can have a more comfortable and safe place to sit on for the long journey. While the topbox served as Totti’s backrest for most of the trip, the kids also had solid grab rails which were mounted on the motorcycle’s frame for added safety.

Together with 60 other riders, Resty and his sons took the 4,000 journey, passing through Dapitan, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Caticlan, Mindoro, Clark, Manila, Vigan, Appari, Sagada, Baguio, Legazpi, and Tacloban, covering a total of 36 provinces.

It was definitely the best geography lesson a dad could ever give his kids! They also passed a number of historical places and top tourist spots.

While the journey wasn’t all in fair weather and they rode through some rough roads, the experience was definitely the best! These boys aren’t going to forget this once-in-a-lifetime experience anytime soon! I’m definitely envious!
