Honorary doctorate degree for President Duterte stirs controversy online. Here’s what Paolo Duterte’s take on the issue!

When word got around the state university is giving an honorary doctorate degree for Pres. Duterte, the social media receive the news with mixed reactions.

One of the loudest dissenting voices came from the UP students and alumni.

I am Yael Toribio, a BS Business Administration student, posted a remark on his Facebook timeline that reads:

I am against the conferment of an honorary law doctorate by the UP Board of Regents to Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Traditions exist because such repeated acts strengthen values that an institution upholds, and in our case – honor and excellence.

There is no way that misogyny, blatant disregard for human rights, and murder in creating a false sense of security and progress at the expense of concealing the real pressing problems of our society merit such recognition.

As a university that constantly strives to reimagine the society in upholding the greater good, instead of giving recognition and honor, we must continue to challenge the deplorable status quo by condemning at all costs such system that allows oppression to prevail.

Let’s be united by taking part in the indignation rally tomorrow, 5:30 pm at the AS Steps.

Shakira Sison, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of the Philippines Los Baños said: “I am against the conferment of an honorary law doctorate by the UP Board of Regents to President Rodrigo Duterte.

By giving honor to a man who challenges basic human decency, discourages public dissent, promotes a culture of impunity, and lauds extra-judicial killings, UP has taken a major step backward in upholding Honor and Excellence.

Esquire Philippines posted a sarcastic status update on Facebook to welcome the news of Pres. Duterte’s honorary doctorate degree.

Meanwhile, presidential son Paolo Duterte took to Facebook to express his take on the controversial honorary doctorate degree for his Dad, Pres. Duterte.

“Growing up, we were taught by our father of the value of education. That is why we really strive hard to get a degree no matter what.

But aside from getting a degree, our father also inculcated in us that knowledge and wisdom must go hand in hand with the degree.Meaning, whatever level of education we achieve, the level of knowledge and wisdom we gain must also be at par or even higher.

Given that and knowing my father, he does not give a heck with any “honorary degree” simply because he knows he did not work hard for such a degree. All throughout the years of his public life, President Rodrigo Duterte has always shied away from public recognitions.

He has always been a simple man, satisfied with what he have and works hard to make a difference not just for his family but for the Dabawenyos and now the Filipino nation. Being elected as president is enough recognition. No other recognition or honorary degrees could eclipse that.

To the so-called learned individuals who frown upon the plan of the University of the Philippines to grant an honorary doctorate degree to the President, you can have that honorary degree for all we care.

Our family though thank the UP Board of Regents for even considering our father. Pero ok na akong papa as being the President of the Republic of the Philippines.”
