Leni Robredo gets flak on social media for re-posting this photo of a relief operation in Surigao. Why?

“When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Matthew 6:3

The Bible proverb above is very old but still very relevant, especially in our egocentric society today.

This is what Leni Robredo should learn by heart.

A day after a strong quake jolted Surigao, that was Saturday, a truck full of bottled water was delivered to the quake victims.

No mention on social media about the donation from Coca Cola until the morning of February 13, 2017 when local businessman posted the photo below.

To cap his post, the businessman, let’s call him Jake, wrote a fitting caption to the photo and wrote:

Morning after the earthquake, we got a hundred calls from friends. One call jolted me out of my seat, and the person just asked what we needed most-we answered ‘drinking water’. Within that day, a mystery truck arrives at City Hall loaded with 420 cases of six-liter bottled water straight to the distribution center. No other labels. No fanfare and color. Swift, simple and quiet. On behalf of a grateful city, we give credit where credit is due, so I just have to say thank you, VP Leni Robredo and to all of you who are helping Surigao in deed and in prayer. Salamat sa inyo.

Jake’s post did not get notice until the Office of the Vice President re-posted the photo on the official Facebook page of Leni Robredo. However, when you check it again, the photo has been removed from the page.

Jake’s post quickly gained traction and has been shared 2,404 times as of this writing.

Thinking Pinoy was the first to notice something is not right with Jake’s post. He posted the meme below to point out that the OVP has nothing to do with the bottled water delivery to the quake victims.

Krizette Laureta Chu aka fearless Krizette, scolded the OVP for credit-grabbing.

Sino si Jake Miranda at bakit nya tinawag na “mystery truck” ang PULANG-PULANG TRUCK ng Coke just to make it appear na galing ang tubig kay Leni? at bakit may malicious intent na ginawang grey ang pic para di makita yung pula?

Pangalawa, all the excuses of her defensive anonymous bloggers–hindi naman daw nag claim si Leni, she talked to Coke daw para magpadala ng Wilkins–are lies. Nobody has to talk to Coca Cola Femsa/Bottlers to give away water. They did it during Yolanda separate of any political affiliation, and they will do it again because that’s part of their corporate social responsibility program. You will down Coke just to lift Leni’s image when Coke has been doing this for a long time.

COCA-COLA Philippines usually doesn’t trumpet their help, but they did post last evening, I guess, to correct the notion that the VP had anything to do with the company donation, because of this post circulating all day. Nakakahiya ang sarili nating Office of the Vice President of the Philippines, nirepost pa.

Eh ayan, pahiya kayo ngayon.

Moral lesson: PAG SAKUNA, PLEASE PO, WAG POLITIKAHIN. NANGYARI NA ITO KAY MAR AT AQUINO NA PINOLITIKA ANG YOLANDA , NA KARMA NG BONGGA.

But Jake insist that the OVP and Leni Robredo has indeed made the bottled water donation to the quake victims possible, based on his updated post. Look!

SO FOR THE IGNORANT. I am an active local citizen, volunteer, etc. VP staff called me early on Saturday morning asking for need, and I relayed ‘drinking water.’ VP sought assistance of Coca Cola Foundation, and a truck of water was immediately dispatched from a nearby city and arrived same day Saturday night. No fanfare. It was the first donation to arrive so I checked source and learned VP facilitated. Tell me, would Coca-Cola Foundation be quick to deliver water without someone directing? City promptly distributed 330 cases and 90 cases left is earmarked for one whole barangay. SO THERE.

In capping this post, let me share the official statement from Coca-cola about the issue.

Coca-Cola brings safe drinking water to earthquake-stricken communities.

As the people of Surigao recover from the devastation wrought by the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Surigao Province last Friday, the Coca-Cola System immediately arranged to send aid in the form of a vital resource–safe and clean drinking water.

On February 11 – the day after the quake, over 7,500 liters of Wilkins Distilled water were unloaded at Surigao City Hall. The drinking water was distributed through the efforts of the local government, with the assistance of Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines pre-sellers, 301B personnel of the Philippine Army, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

In your humble opinion, whose telling the truth?
