Look: Beaching of the carcass of a white hairy sea creature in Surigao goes viral

A week or so after the strong Surigao earthquake, an unusual number of deep-sea creatures have been caught by local fishermen and posted on social media.

First, there was an oarfish caught in Carmen, Agusan del Norte. Then, another oarfish was caught in Barangay Gusa, Cagayan de Oro.

The phenomenon has sparked speculation among social media people that another earthquake is coming. This because in Japanese folklore, oarfish is the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace” and a herald of earthquakes.

Just today, the social media is abuzz with the photo of a sunfish or Mola-mola circulating online. The sunfish was in Balingasag. Misamis Oriental in Mindanao. Another deep-sea fish commonly found in temperate waters.

Six hours later, another photo of a strange and hairy deep-sea creature has been making more splash than the previous post of deep-sea fishes.

The strange creature has turned up again in Mindanao in Dinagat Island Surigao.

The photo of the strange creature has started a name game among social media people. Some are serious but many joined for the fun of it.

According to knowledgeable netizens, the sea creature is a carcass of a dead whale.

While one netizen named it as a globster.

According to Wikipedia, a globster is an unidentified organic mass that washes up on the shoreline of an ocean or other body of water. A globster is distinguished from a normal beached carcass by being hard to identify, at least by initial untrained observers, and by creating controversy as to its identity. Jhon Carlo S. Raganit originated this creature. [Wikipedia]

Once again, the social media people can’t help but speculate about a forthcoming natural disaster especially an earthquake.
