
After 30 glorious years, 134 launches and two fiery tragedies, NASA’s Space Shuttle program is coming to an end.
NASA’s first space shuttle flight was in April 1981. On Friday, July 8, at11:26 a.m. EDT (1526 GMT), the space shuttle Atlantis will lift off on the 135th and final space shuttle flight ever.
Code-named STS-135 (ISS assembly flight ULF7), the final planned mission of the American Space Shuttle will ferry extra supplies to the International Space Station. STS-135 is planned to be a 12 day mission, launching July 8 and landing on July 20.
Once Atlantis lands at the end of a 12-day mission, it and the other two remaining shuttles will be retired to museums.
NASA would then focus on getting men to Mars.
