Spinner Dolphin Dies after Refusing to Go Back to the Ocean, Despite Attempts by People to Get it to Deeper Waters

A spinner dolphin died in the shores of Barangay Pantao in Libon, Albay last Saturday after beaching itself despite attempts by the locals to get it to deeper waters.

According to the locals, they found the spinner dolphin in shallow waters the previous day. They tried driving the creature away so it would go back to the ocean but it repeatedly swam to shallow waters.

When it was dark, the locals were no longer able to see the sea creature and thought it was already safe back in the ocean but they were saddened to discover it dead at around 7AM last Saturday.

While the spinner dolphin sustained some wounds on its tail, it is believed that it only got that from the rocks in the shallow area where it later died at low tide. The cause of death is still unknown but one village councilor in Pantao said that the dolphin could have been stressed that’s why it didn’t want to get back to sea.

Many of the locals rushed to the scene to take photos with the dead dolphin which was estimated to weigh anywhere from 60 to 70 kilograms.

Officials from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will examine the spinner dolphin and try to determine its cause of death.
